Learning philosophy

The PYP Programme is a “transdisciplinary programme of international education designed to foster the development of the whole child.” (IBO.org) with the underlying constructivist principle of active, collaborative and authentic learning. The curriculum framework is made up of five essential elements that embody the whole learning experience: concepts, knowledge, skills, attitudes, and action. The knowledge component is developed through inquiries into six transdisciplinary themes, supported by six subject areas. It is best summed up by the four planning strands that drive each unit of inquiry:

  • What do we already know?
  • What do we want to learn? i.e the written curriculum.
  • How best will we learn? i.e the taught curriculum.
  • How will we know what we have learned? i.e the assessed curriculum.

Key Questions:

What is it like?

How does it work?

Why is it like it is?

 How is it changing?

 How is it connected?

What are the points of view?

What are our responsibilities?

How do we know?

The PYP framework encourages the students to work independently, learning for themselves and constructing their own knowledge base and set of skills. Students are given ownership of the learning process and are encouraged to actively participate in their own education by setting personal goals and practicing on-going self-evaluation and reflection.

Does the PYP framework influence ICT technology choices?

ICT technology choices have to be made in light of the PYP framework and philosophy. The logical choice of best fit for purpose has to be aligned with the potential for independent use, active participation, and development of skills. The use of any technology should allow for meaningful activities with a definite purpose and a final product.

In view of this, the obvious choice of technology from the three possible programmes is the 2animate software as it fulfills most accurately the criteria of choice, i.e. ease of use, potential for independent work, and realistic and meaningful activity. It is also a relatively inexpensive option and its purchase could probably be covered through the existing channels of additional funding available.
